PIT Count

Access historic Point In Time Count reports through our chronological list of linked documents.

One of several important sources of data about homelessness in Chittenden County, Vermont, is the annual “POINT IN TIME” Count of Homelessness. This count provides us with a snapshot, which can never be 100 percent accurate, of homelessness in our area on a particular day of the year.

Vermont’s Annual Point-in-Time Count of people experiencing homelessness, sheltered and unsheltered, took place on the night of Wednesday, January 22nd-23rd, 2025.

Each year, the Chittenden County Homeless Alliance joins communities across Vermont and nationwide in conducting a Point In Time Count. The “PIT Count” is a count and survey of all individuals and families experiencing “literal homelessness” in Vermont.

The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) considers individuals and families “literally homeless” when they live in a place not meant for human habitation (such as a tent, a vehicle, or on the streets), in an emergency shelter, in transitional housing, or in a hotel paid for by a government or charitable organization. Knowing how many people are homeless in Vermont helps us improve programs and services.
